The fashion industry is a competitive one, with many designers competing for the same customers. Fashion consultants are often hired to provide personalized advice and styling services to clients.  A fashion consultant can help you find a style that suits your body type, budget and lifestyle. They will offer advice on what colors, fabrics and trends will be in this season, as well as how to mix-and-match pieces in your wardrobe.Getting them to do the hard work can save you time and money.  Have you ever considered hiring a fashion consultant?  Do you think they could help you dress for success?

Are you looking to improve your appearance?  If you are looking to do so in the workplace, you may be interested in doing more than getting a beauty makeover. When it comes to improving appearances in the workplace, many men and women want to improve their professionalism. One of the best ways to about doing so is by dressing for success.

As nice as it is to hear that you should dress for success, especially when looking to improve your professionalism in the workplace, you may have an unlimited number of questions.  You may be wondering why you should do so, how you can, and how you can go about shopping for new clothes.  If you do not have the time or the patience often needed to get all of these answers, you may want to seek professional assistance. That assistance could come from a professional fashion consultant.

If you aren’t familiar with fashion consultants, you should know that they come in a number of different formats. It is possible to find fashion consultants that have specialties, such as hair, clothing, or makeup. You may also find fashion consultants that operate solely online, locally, or both. The good news with having all of these options is that it should be relatively easy for you to seek professional assistance from a fashion consultant, should you wish to do so.

Speaking of wishing to seek assistance from a fashion consultant, you may be curious as to what the benefits of doing so are.  Fashion consultants are individuals who are considered experts in the field of fashion. These individuals usually have experience with assisting clients, like you, as well as with researching the latest in fashion. This is professional advice that you can get, without having to spend time doing the research yourself.  This, alone, is enough reason for many individuals to seek assistance from a fashion consultant.

Another one of the many reasons why you should turn to a fashion consultant, when looking to improve your professionalism in the workplace is because of their expertise. Although some fashion consultants do have specialties, you will find that most are familiar with workplace fashions. This knowledge also includes tips and tricks to look more successful, as well as common mistakes that you, yourself, do not want to make.  This is important, as many do-it-yourselfers often make mistakes when trying to improve their professionalism at work, especially the first time around.

Should you decide to use the services of a professional fashion consultant, to improve your appearance at work, you will want to start your search. As previously stated, fashion consultants can both be found online or locally.  Your local phonebook and standard internet searches are both good approaches to take.  When examining fashion consultants, you will want to examine services offered, years of experience, as well as costs.  Yes, you will have to pay to use the services of a professional fashion consultant. With that in mind, you should know that many are more than pleased with the results that they do receive, no matter what the costs.

As outlined above, there are a number of benefits to seeking the professional help of a fashion consultant, as well as a number of reasons for doing so. In addition to using the services of a fashion consultant to assist you with improving your professionalism at work, you can also use a fashion consultant to help you prepare for job interviews, your wedding, or other important events.

Ethical Fashion: What, Why and Why Now?

We all like clothes that make us look good, but there’s a growing school of thought that our fashion choices should make us feel good too.  I mean feel good deep inside by being happy that the brands, materials and retailers we have chosen pursue strong ethical policies and achieve high standards.  Ethical fashion is here to stay, as more of us move away from single use fashion, and often the designs are on the cutting edge of fashion: you don’t need to be dowdy to be green. It can be a bit of a minefield though, so it’s worth doing a bit of reading up before you make your choices.

Overview

What is ethical fashion, why is it important, and why are we just hearing about it now? Well, to answer these questions we start with what is wrong with clothing production today. Most clothing available in stores today is produced in an unethical manner using sweatshop and/or child labour to ensure a larger profit margin. Manufacturers use unsustainable fabrics like non-organic cotton (dubbed as natural, it accounts for almost 25% of all pesticide use) and polyester (which is a petroleum by-product). They use conventional dying practices which release chlorine, chromium, and other pollutants into the environment posing a health risk to the farmers, assemblers and wearers (7 of the top 15 pesticides used on conventional US cotton crops are “possible” to “known” human carcinogens). The shift to ethical production practices in the clothing industry has been undeniably important for a long time making the market ripe for a positive change. Consumers are starting to demand better.

What is Ethical Fashion?

Ethical fashion is that which is produced using: fairly-paid and fairly-treated adult workers; sustainable fabrics and materials like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and reclaimed or recycled materials; low-impact fiber-reactive dyes or vegetable dyes; respect for a healthy environment and/or product for the farmer, the assembler, and the wearer of the clothing.

Why Ethical Fashion?

We are all responsible for how our own lifestyles affect the environment. Simple measures can be taken to achieve big changes by simply switching our buying patterns to include products made of low impact materials. Positive pressure on businesses who have yet to voluntarily clean up their acts is very easily applied by simply choosing not to spend money on their products, and helping – little by little – to grow the businesses who have made an explicit commitment to responsible business practice.

Why Now?

The wonderful thing about the booming ethical fashion industry is the huge variety of designs, colours, cuts, fabrics and sizes now available. Long stigmatized as cousin to the burlap sack, the ethical offerings today are design-oriented. Designers with heart are creating beautiful, sexy, edgy, classic, current, imaginative, and, yes, flattering pieces – ethics will simply not be compromised and thankfully neither will the look and feel of their work. Reducing our footprint can be done without making any sacrifices.

One of the main driving forces of the ethical fashion boom is public awareness. Thanks to exposés on large manufacturers, the fact that sweatshop labour is used for the overwhelming majority of production can no longer be ignored. The power of boycotting has been demonstrated, as has the power of voting with our dollars to support good practice. Thanks to accessible work like “An Inconvenient Truth”, the lay person is no longer free to assuage their environmental guilt with the denial of the existence of climate change. Thanks to alternative medical practitioners, who deal with cause instead of just symptom, we’re learning that we can build health by surrounding ourselves with and consuming healthy things.

Consumers are growing weary of the quantity without quality mentality. Most designers with an ethical bent to their art, work in small batches, producing high quality goods with exceptional fabrics. Consumers are, in growing numbers, appreciating the right to vote with their dollars; and are exercising it to support expansion of the sustainable textile industry, small farmers and farm co-operatives. We’re all looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact, increase our social contribution, ease our consciences, hold on to some creature comforts, and continue celebrating art in all its forms.

Exactly What to Wear to a Wedding as a Guest

A wedding is the perfect chance to dress up and we all want to look our best, even if we aren’t closely involved with the bridal party.  There are some key rules to follow to avoid embarrassment and I have a few hints and tips to share with you to make the most of your wardrobe and look your best at the wedding of the year.

Follow the Dress Code

This is key as it’s a request to you from the bride and groom, but they will usually have considered the venue and the plans for the day and chosen accordingly.   The majority of couples will set a wedding dress code depending on the style of the event, as well as the time of year it’s taking place. What you wear to a black-tie wedding in the winter, for example, will be vastly different than what you wear to a casual wedding in the middle of summer.

If the dress code is black-tie, then there is choice will be very limited for men: a black tuxedo or a kilt if that’s appropriate for you.  Similarly, women are encouraged to dress up in a floor-length evening gown or an elegant dress.  Elegance should be the key decider and it’s better not to flash too much flesh: leave it at a hint of cleavage or a glimpse or leg, but don’t go overboard with either. Weddings are family events and usually day to evening celebrations, so steer clear of anything too daring or risqué.

Regardless of the dress code wearing jeans is a complete and utter no-no at weddings. Remember that this is the bride and groom’s special day and if it were your wedding, you’d expect guests to make an effort.

Colour Choices

The cardinal sin of weddings, wearing white is by far the biggest mistake that can be made by a wedding guest. No guest should steal the attention away from the bride; it is her special day after all. In a white dress, the possibility of being confused for the bride is all too great, so no matter how good white looks on you or how much you love that outfit, give it a miss.

You’re going to a wedding not a funeral, so try to avoid black. This rule is especially relevant for summer weddings when guests should embrace the celebratory vibe of the day and opt for bold colours and prints.  A black dress works better for a black tie dress code, but I’d still avoid it and opt for another colour if possible.  If you have the perfect black dress that you are desperate, consider brightening up with coloured accessories, like a carefully chosen handbag.

Summer is the perfect opportunity to wear bright colours or pretty pastels. However, be sure to check in advance what colour the bridesmaids are wearing: you don’t want to be mistaken for part of the bridal party and you probably don’t want to clash with them either.  Many Asian weddings will expect you to wear bright colours: it’s all part of the celebrations.

Dress for the Season

The season and location of the wedding are great indicators of what to wear.  For example, if it’s a beach wedding, that’s an indication that you shouldn’t show up in a formal dress. Summer weddings usually lean towards shorter styles with lighter colours, for example, while a fall wedding caters to darker jewel-toned colors and richer fabrics like velvet and silk.  For a winter wedding feel free to rock some faux fur: it’s glamorous, on-trend and great for keeping you warm during those outdoor photo shoots.

Consider the Venue

Most places of worship have specific rules around what is, and isn’t acceptable to wear. In church, shoulders should often be covered as bare arms are still frowned upon.  In more traditional Catholic churches women are expected to bring a shawl to cover their shoulders and arms. Cover your head and your hair in a synagogue as well, and the same for a Muslim, Hindu or Sikh wedding.

Consider the reception venue too.  A grand hotel probably expects a higher standard of dress than a wedding celebration at a local pub.

The venue can also indicate what kind of shoes you should wear too. If you’re outside, opt for a chunky heel or even flats. If you wear a kitten heel or a stiletto, you might risk sinking into the ground. If indoors, you can never go wrong with a pump heel.

Plus Size Fashion: Is There Really Such a Thing?

12 December 2022 by amber Leave a Comment

plus sized fashion

Plus size fashion is the term for clothing that is proportioned to fit people with larger body sizes. The term “plus size” refers to any clothing size (not just dress sizes) that are larger than average, which typically includes women’s sizes 16 and up, and men’s sizes 44 and up in the US.  In the UK plus size fashion starts a bit smaller at a size 18 (dress sizes differ between the UK and the US).

The plus-sized market has been growing in the past decade. This is due to the rise of social media influencers who promote a more diverse representation of bodies in fashion, as well as an increase in demand for clothes that are comfortable and flattering for people with a fuller frame.

Are you considered to be a plus sized individual?  If you are, what do you wear for clothing?  If you are like many other plus sized individuals, you may respond with something off of a store rack.  While it is more than possible to shop at a department store or a traditional clothing store, do you know that there are stores designed just for plus sized women, as well as men?  There are and if you haven’t already, you may want to think about visiting one.

When it comes to shopping at or at least browsing at a plus sized clothing store, there are many men and women who wonder why they should bother, especially if their clothes are already bought from somewhere else. What you need to remember is that plus size clothing isn’t what it used to be in the past.  Due to an increase in the need for plus sized clothing and fashion accessories, there are now many fashion designers who are starting to focus on individuals out there who are just like you.

As previously mentioned, plus sized fashions aren’t necessarily what they used to be.  In fact, some would be hard pressed to refer to the old style of plus sized clothing as fashion.  The same cannot be said for today’s plus sized fashion clothing and accessories.  It is now possible to look and feel like a beautiful model, despite being a plus sized women or even a man.  There are a large number of plus size clothing pieces that are designed to make you look great for a day hanging out with your friends, a day at the gym, a day at work, or a night out on the town.  No matter what occasion you would like to dress for, you should be able to find beautiful pieces of plus sized fashions to get you there.

If you are interested in finding a plus size clothing store to shop at, you may want to consider visiting one of your local shopping malls or shopping plazas.  It is not uncommon to find a plus size clothing store located inside these shopping centres.  If you are looking for plus sized women’s clothing, you are more likely to find specialty stores than men are, as they tend to be more popular.  You may also be able to find other local plus size clothing stores to shop at by using your local phone book, online business directories, or recommendations from those that you know.

In addition to shopping at local plus size clothing stores, you may also want to examine the online retailers who run plus sized clothing stores online. What is nice about shopping online is that you are often given a larger selection of retailers and products to choose from. This means more clothing choices and clothing accessories for you.  It is also important to mention that shopping online allows you to do so anytime, day or night, from the comfort of your own home. You can easily find a number of online plus size clothing retailers by performing a standard internet search or by asking those that you know for recommendations.

As a reminder, it is more than possible to find plus sized fashion clothing pieces and accessories available for sale.  If you haven’t updated your wardrobe in some time, you way want to think about doing so.  You may actually be surprised with the plus sized fashions that you can find available for sale.

The History of Sunglasses

12 December 2022 by amber Leave a Comment

history of sunglasses
Photo by Sebastian Coman Travel on Unsplash

There are many reasons for why we wear sunglasses. One of the most common reasons is to protect our eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. It’s not just about protection though, it’s also more comfortable to shield your eyes from the glare of bright sun.  Obviously that can prove problematic when you move from brightly lit areas to darker ones, but it’s usually easy enough to just take off or put on your sunglasses. In addition, sunglasses can also protect our eyes from dust or other particles in the air that may irritate our eyes.  This can be useful if there are a lot of building sites around or you are simply at the beach on a windy day.  And of course sunglasses can just be part of your outfit’s look or can be recommended by an eyecare professional.

It may shock you to learn that sunglasses weren’t always used to protect people’s eyes from the sun. The history of sunglasses dates back to ancient China and Rome. It has been reported that the Roman emperor Nero enjoyed watching gladiator fights through polished gems. In China, sunglasses were used in the twelfth century or even earlier. Sunglasses were first made out of lenses that were flat panes of smoky quartz. These types of sunglasses could not correct vision, or protect from harmful UV rays, but did reduce glare. Chinese judges used the smoky quartz glasses to hide their facial expressions when they interrogated witnesses.

Sunglasses did not undergo further changes until about the eighteenth century because of the work of James Ayscough. He experimented with tinted lenses in spectacles. Ayscough was steadfast in the belief that glasses tinted with a blue or green colour could potentially correct specific vision problems. Ayscough was not concerned with protecting the eyes from the suns rays.

Sunglasses underwent the change into the popular item they are today when Sam Foster introduced them to America in 1929. These sunglasses were designed to protect people’s eyes from the sun. Foster sold his sunglasses on the beaches of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Foster’s sunglasses were sold at Woolworth on the boardwalk.

In 1936, sunglasses became polarized when Edwin H. Land began using his patented Polaroid filter when making sunglasses. Around this time, even more Americans started buying sunglasses. Famous movie stars and musicians also began to wear sunglasses. They started to become not only a way to protect against sun glare, but also a way to be “cool.” Sunglasses became a cultural phenomenon, and some people wore them even when it wasn’t sunny, or when they were indoors.

Today, sunglasses continue to have advances. UV protection has almost become an industry standard, and there are sunglasses available for a variety of sports. There are numerous tints available for sunglasses, and sunglasses have changed styles over the years. Prescription glasses have also been given tints that only appear when the sun’s rays hit the glasses. In 2004, Oakley developed a brand of sunglasses that had a built-in digital audio player. Many blind people now wear sunglasses, and many recognizable celebrities can be found wearing sunglasses. Even fictional characters can be seen wearing them. Sunglasses have come a long way from their early Roman and Chinese history!

Check out our guide to choosing sunglasses.
